Our choices for election

Governor

Deval Patrick

There has been much emphasis placed on the tenor of some campaign advertisements in this most significant contest. It has, in some ways, been a nasty business.

Because of that, much less has been said about the robust, far-ranging and, in most cases, substantive discussion of issues the four candidates standing for the top state job have presented to voters.

Rarely has the race for governor seen such a display of thoughtful advocacy, innovative suggestion, engaging humor and commitment to an ideal of public service.

Rising above this elevated standard has been one candidate who exhibits all of these attributes and more.

Deval Patrick has presented intelligence tempered with humanity, an ability to motivate citizens, and given state residents a spark of hope for meaningful change in our government

We believe he is the best choice to lead the commonwealth.

U.S. senator

Edward M. Kennedy

Rarely has our senior senator been so energized, eloquent and effective as during this past term. He deserves a strong vote of confidence and the opportunity to continue his significant work.

Attorney general

Martha Coakley

Coakley is an impressive, articulate, prosecutor with a broad vision we believe well-suited for the complex issues that office confronts.

Secretary of state

William F. Galvin

He has been a subtle but consistent agent of change for the better and has earned re-election.

Treasurer

Timothy P. Cahill

Rarely has a state treasurer as rapidly and effectively worked to protect and prosper the citizens' revenues, enhance accountability and improve upon operations in a variety of fiscal arenas.

Auditor

A. Joseph DeNucci

In recent years, the incumbent has aggressively pursued investigations of programs and operations with factual analysis — all to the benefit of the taxpayers.

Representatives in Congress

Fourth District

Barney Frank

Unopposed, but nonetheless worthy of endorsement for the intellectual rigor and tenacity that have become his trademarks.

Ninth District

Stephen F. Lynch

Lynch has made good on his previous campaign promises to represent his diverse constituency with open-mindedness.

Tenth District

William D. Delahunt

His ongoing commitment to regional economic development, issues affecting the elderly, broader international policy matters and very personal constituent concerns are among the reasons we support re-election of Delahunt.
